Chorus is designed to train students in musicianship, sight-reading, and choral singing. The course may
be taken two semesters per year. Each student is assigned a music folder for which he/she is responsible.
If music is lost or destroyed, the student must pay for it.

Objective; The student will:

A. Sing in tune with good tone quality.
B. Sing major, minor, and chromatic scales.
C. Sing in an ensemble style.
D. Sight-read an easy composition.
E. Sing a variety of music.
F. Understand basic music terminology and vocabulary.
G. Perform in all concerts.
H. Attend all extra rehearsals.

Outline:

A. Warm-up exercises and scales
B. Daily theory lesson
C. Two, three, and four part singing of selected pieces
D. Sight reading studies
E. Ensemble singing
F. Musical Interpretation
G. Music vocabulary and terminology.

Requirements:

A. Each choral student is required to participate in all concerts and rehearsals. Please refer to the Choral Calendar at www.fchschorus.org for specific dates. Any additional performances or rehearsals will be planned at least two weeks in advance if at all possible. Failure to participate in a concert will result in the loss of an opportunity to gain 50 points toward the performance project grade. Failure to participate in a scheduled after-school or before school rehearsal will result in the loss of an opportunity to gain 25 points toward the performance project grade.

B. A student may be excused from a concert or rehearsal in the case of a death in the family or personal illness IF:
1. The director is notified PRIOR to the event. If you are absent from school, you are not automatically excused. Your parent should call the school and advise the director that you will be unable to attend the event based on the above excuses.

2. A written excuse is also required (a doctor’s excuse is preferred) after the event based on one of the above excuses.

When excused, the student will be required to complete a make-up assignment that will be due three days after the event. Checking out or in does not excuse students from assignments due that day.

Each student is an important part of the ensemble sound. Please be a responsible and committed member of YOUR chorus.

Remember: any student performing with the chorus during the afternoon or evening must be present in school the day of the concert or rehearsal.

C. A vocabulary/theory test will be given approximately every two weeks and will help you accumulate points toward your final grade. Students will have daily lessons to complete during class that will help prepare for quizzes and tests. If a student is absent from class, he/she is responsible for making up any missed class assignments before or after school.

D. Each student will be required to attend two concerts outside their regular performance schedule. Prior approval is required for each concert. A one page summary of each concert must be turned in with in five days of the performance.

E. A final exam will be given at the end of the semester and will count 15% of your final grade.

A. Be on time. 2nd tardy-20 minute detention with teacher
3rd tardy-30 minute detention with teacher
